Löyly, which has two locations, is all about the sauna experience. Here you get two hours with every session, so this isn’t an in and out kind of thing. I brought a book and allowed myself to really relax into the relaxation. On the afternoon I visited, almost everyone there was naked and quiet, either talking to the friends they had come with, or closing their eyes and relaxing in the pool.

Löyly would probably be my top choice for someone looking for a social option that isn’t always slammed (I’m looking at you Knot Springs) and is fine without a soaking pool. Honestly, people don’t really engage in the space. Folks are were kind/self-aware, there’s not a lot of interaction between people.

A photographer was with me for most of it and still, it was such a lovely relaxing time, even if there’s almost no way I could imagine paying for it myself. Knot Springs is a swimsuit-wearing spa, which isn’t my first choice. A steam in a swimsuit is just a bit too close to what I imagine a hot dog must experience when being boiled. But, on a recent trip there with a couple friends who also have 3-year-olds, we dubbed the whole thing Mom Spring Break.
Upon entering the locker room, T was the most comfortable. Jane was a little less comfortable. The steam room, when it was set to a proper temperature, provided a satisfying, eucalyptus-y steam. Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays (spa without treatment is not available on Saturday).
Towels, robes and sandals provided. I found the whole thing relaxing and enjoyable and would probably have been talked into purchasing a package if I didn’t live so very far away. No, but it can get busy and walk-ins are not always available. They’ve also instituted something called a “tranquility necklace,” which is a necklace you can wear to indicate to other people you don’t want to talk.
While the towels weren't the best, and the shower only dispensed one kind of soap, the novelty of renting a hot tub for an hour is definitely worth the price of admission. The chlorinated saltwater, kept at 100 degrees, felt wonderful, but after visiting other local soaking spots, I was very aware of the lack of rules at the pool. Kids splashed and yelled and it was hard to ignore the couple next to me, cuddling and gazing deeply into each other’s eyes. The quiet here is nice, though it would probably be fun to bring a friend, too. Still, I could have spent at least another hour under the stars reading my book and relaxing.
It’s also a good idea to bring a bathing suit and towel, as well as a change of clothes for after your visit. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance from the staff if you’re unsure about anything. I did feel a little better about it after my tub time ended and I tried out the huge, very hot sauna, which is free with any service.
